The following board members were elected in April 2019 and will take office in July 2019. The board remains the same as last year with the exception of the VP Finance role.
Statements of Intent
President: Jennifer Maddox
My name is Jennifer Maddox. I have 2 children at Booksin, Owen - in 2nd grade, and Reese - in kinder. I've lived in the Bay Area for 11 years and am originally from the midwest. I have a degree in finance, and spent most of my career in sales and marketing for financial software companies. I have been involved with Booksin as a classroom volunteer, the auction chair the last couple of years, an art docent, and am organizing this year's Amazing Race. I am a big advocate of public education and am proud to be part of our strong Booksin community. I would be honored to serve as a leader in our BESCA Board and continue the work of being advocates for each of our students.
VP of Communications: Anne Herz
My name is Anne Herz and I have one son - a second grader at Booksin. In my prior work life, I was a software engineer at Apple. I love Willow Glen and being a member of the Booksin Community. In my three years at Booksin, I’ve found that I enjoy volunteering in many ways. Whether volunteering in the classroom, serving as an art or garden docent, or in my roles with the Walkathon and Hicklebees Book Fair, one of the things I love most is connecting with other families. I am currently serving as the VP of Communications for 2018-2019. As the VP of Communications, my primary goals are to make it easier for families to find the information they want and need, and to make it easier for the volunteers who organize events at school to communicate with the families. In this past year as VP of Communications I revamped the BESCA website, extended the use of the online BESCA Shop, and brought Konstella to Booksin in an effort to improve communications and create more of a sense of community. I would love to serve again as VP of Communications.
Co-VP of Community Events: Katie Davis
Hello, my name is Katie Davis. I have three children, two currently enrolled at Booksin in 3rd and Kindergarten and my youngest will be joining her brothers at Booksin next year. During our time at Booksin, I’ve volunteered in a number of different roles: classroom volunteer, Art, Garden, Walkathon, and now serving as co-VP of Community Events on BESCA. What sets our school apart from others is our strong sense of community. This past year I really enjoyed making sure some of our best community building events, like Booksin Night at the Giants and Walkathon, continue to bring families together. I’ve also loved pioneering new events for school like Hapa’s Parents Night Out and Celebrate Booksin. I hope to serve another year and continue to bring families closer together.
Co-VP of Community Events: Michelle Pilling
My name is Michelle Pilling. I have a 4th grader, Matteo, and a 1st grader, Liv, at Booksin. We moved to Willow Glen 7 years ago and love the community here. I have enjoyed our 5 years at Booksin and being involved in volunteering with things such as: class parent, classroom helper, art docent, garden parent, silent auction team, and chairing Family Fun Night in 2018. It has been a pleasure to be on the BESCA board as Co-VP of Community Events this past year and being able to work with wonderful parents and staff to provide events for our school and community. I would love to continue to contribute to the Booksin community by staying on the BESCA board next school year.
VP of Volunteers: Shabnum Husain
My name is Shabnum Husain. My family moved to Willow Glen, and joined the Booksin community 4 years ago. I currently have a 3rd grader, a 5th grader, and a Transitional Kindergartener. I am a native New Yorker: born, raised and educated. In my former career with Verizon Wireless, I retained roles with Corporate Customer Relations and Sales Management. Since moving to the Bay Area, I've enjoyed so many aspects of our close knit community. Through my years at Booksin I've been a room parent, Art Docent, Garden Teacher, and held lead positions for field days and Walkathon. Outside school hours, I helped launch and lead a Girl Scout troop who's members are primarily Booksin Brownies. I'm often characterized as a people person. Understanding that our school wouldn't be anywhere without it's parent community, I welcome the opportunity to act as a liaison for our volunteers in every way that I can, and continue to streamline communication, and opportunities for maximum participation. I am proud to be a Booksin Parent, and would be honored join the BESCA Board.
2018 VP of Finance: Sunshine Benke
My name is Sunshine Benke and I will have my older boy, Camden, entering the 2nd grade at Booksin for the 2017-2018 school year, I also have a younger boy, Cohen, who will be hopefully joining his brother in the 2018-2019 school year. I am a NY transplant, but have lived in the area for almost 10 years now. I graduated college with a finance degree and worked at Merrill Lynch before leaving finance when I moved to the Bay Area. I have been a parent volunteer in Camden's classroom once a week all three years of his schooling. And I'm involved in a parent participation preschool with my younger son where I will be class coordinator next year. Being involved in my sons' school is very important to me, and I know both my sons (for now), love that I am.
2019 VP of Finance: Sedef Ozcana-Koyuncuoglu
My name is Sedef Ozcana-Koyuncuoglu and I am running for the VP Finance position. I am the parent of two boys, an 8th grader and a 3rd grader at Booksin. We've been living in Willow Glen since 2004 and we love our Willow Glen community! I started my "volunteer' life with my older son, helping out in Mrs. Russo's class starting in 1st grade. As I was working as a product manager at Cisco at the time, my volunteer hours were quite limited. After my second son was born, I decided to quit the corporate life and started working as VP Operations for a non-profit called Open Networking Summit. Within that role, I held various conferences, events and workshops that had 300-1800 people and was responsible for managing budgets up to 4 million dollars. I have a Master's degree in Business Administration. I am looking forward to being more involved in the Booksin community by joining the BESCA Board. Thank you for considering my application.
Secretary: Jill Cleveland
My name is Jill Cleveland. I currently have a 5th grader and Kindergartner at Booksin. I’ve grown up in the Bay Area my entire life and have had the privilege of calling Willow Glen my home for the past 10 years. I have an undergraduate degree in Finance and masters degree in Marketing. I spent over 14 years building a career at Apple in marketing and for the past few years have been able to begin my second career as a stay at home mom. Since then, I’ve been able to spend more time volunteering in my children’s classrooms as an Accelerated Math tutor, homework helper, room parent, art docent, and classroom group leader. I’ve also enjoyed volunteering as a chaperone at many field trips. In this past year as Secretary of BESCA, I’ve learned a lot about all the programs at our school and the thousands of man hours and volunteers needed to make them successful. I’m proud to be a part of the BESCA board to help in any way that I can and hope to continue my experience on the board with another term as Secretary.
Treasurer: Maryanne Evans
My name is Maryanne Evans. My son, Matthew, is in first grade at Booksin and my daughter, Allison, will enter kindergarten in the Fall. I'm a native to the Bay Area, originally from Pacifica. I have a Masters in Accounting and am a CPA. I work part time at a venture firm in Menlo Park. My involvement with Booksin includes being a classroom volunteer and also through helping with the art program and Project Cornerstone. I am so glad to be a part of the Booksin Community and would be honored to serve on our BESCA Board. Go Bulldogs!
