Walkathon Sports Desk

In prior years, Walkathon has had a Sports Desk, where students received lap “credit” if they had to leave Walkathon to fulfill other sports-related responsibilities. Students would temporarily check out of Walkathon, attend their event, and check back in, at which time a certain number of laps would be credited to their lap card in acknowledgment of their off-site activity.

Over the years, the sports desk had become increasingly difficult to manage. There were a number of issues ranging from inequities of qualified activities to belligerent parents to outright cheating. These issues were further exacerbated by the fact that there were challenges staffing the sports desk. In 2020, the BESCA Board and the Walkathon team reassessed and ultimately made the decision to discontinue the Sports Desk.

We recognize that this decision may not be supported by everyone. However, students and their families will simply have to make a decision to either attend their sports event or attend Walkathon for the full day. If students choose to participate in their sports event, they will still be able to do so; they simply will not receive credit for that time away from Walkathon. Walkathon is a true school community event; a vast majority of the students who participate in Walkathon enjoy the day’s events and enjoy the time with their friends and family.

We hope to see all our students at Walkathon for as much of the day as they’re able to participate! Thank you for your understanding.
